I have over three decades of experience as a nurse and midwife and have supported more than 700 couples to birth their baby. I have witnessed the sheer joy and exhilaration of birth as well as the disappointment anxiety and grief when things don’t work out as anticipated.
Having experienced a traumatic birth myself in 2004 I understand how unhelpful feelings can linger for many years afterwards and how they can impact the whole family. I became an independent midwife as I am concerned about how women are increasingly being ‘processed’ through the NHS and not being shown individualised care, which is impacting on their birth experience and leading to trauma. I passionately work with expectant couples to help them to find their power in achieving the birth experience they choose, and I work with couples who are expecting a subsequent baby following a previous poor experience to develop trauma-informed birth plans. This involves liaising with care providers and getting individualised plans in place to mitigate any repetition of the previous trauma.
