🌳 Get outside preferably in nature and walk briskl 🌳 Get outside preferably in nature and walk briskly.

This works in two ways. Firstly the physical activity uses the adrenaline that anxiety has created and completes the sympathetic cycle, essentially putting this activated state to use. Secondly surrounding ourselves in nature has been proven to be very grounding. Studies have shown that spending time in green spaces can lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, as well as decrease feelings of anxiety and depression.

💦 Take a cold shower.

This activates the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic response. At the same time huge amounts of noradrenaline and beta endorphins are released, producing a natural feel good high, reseting the nervous system.

💬 Talk to a trusted friend or professional about what is worrying you.

This can provide a different, compassionate perspective, allow for much needed connection (the ultimate antidote to anxiety) allow a cathartic release of sticky feelings.

📄 Write it all out.

Journalling allows us to get scary, shameful or difficult thoughts down on paper and disarms them. It also activates our observing self which is the first step in adopting a mindful approach to our anxiety.

🌱 Use a grounding technique like 54321

This exercise takes you out of your mind and into the here and now. Name aloud 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell and 1 thing you can taste. This exercise immediately break states and focuses our attention in the present moment (anxiety castes the mind forward in catastrophe).

🥴 Alcohol Hangiety is the worse feeling ever and 🥴 Alcohol 

Hangiety is the worse feeling ever and while the first few drinks at first alleviate anxiety, as soon as it begins to leave the system anxiety will come to the fore even more ferociously.

🤤 A junk food diet.

There is now a ton of evidence about the gut's biome (healthy bacteria) and anxiety. Eating a diet high in sugar can contribute to anxiety as it messes with the guts health, is addictive and disrupts  our energy levels.

❤️‍🩹 Spending time with other anxious people or people who make you anxious because they are unkind or unsupportive.

Sometimes anxiety really is a genuine response to feeling unsafe in our environment and for good cause.

😭 Being alone and isolating yourself from friends and family.

Anxiety will always convince us to stay hidden away, apart from others but this ultimately makes anxiety worse.

😐 Being static

Not moving allows adrenaline to build up and contributes to being stuck in our own mind. When we are alone we have no distractions or other perspectives available to anxiety's punishing thoughts.
